Vehicles & Equipment

How we spend the money you donate........

Our vehicle fleet is perhaps our most obvious expense but the team carries and maintains a great deal of other specialist rescue equipment. Much of this equipment has to be replaced on a regular basis e.g. ropes, helmets, oxygen, entonox, first aid supplies and batteries. Expensive items like stretchers and radios need renewed when they become damaged or outdated. It is the team's aim to provide call-out members with quality protective clothing and other equipment to ensure their personal safety, as well as that of any casualty, while on a search and rescue mission.   All 37 callout members are issued with full 'all weather' protective clothing. The main 'kit' comprises a variety of layering garments, including waterproofs, manufactured by Keela, with other garments sourced from Berghaus, Slioch and Buffalo.  There are of course both winter and summer weight clothing options provided. Our personal issue radios were supplied some years ago through a funding package agreed by the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland (MRCofS) and the Scottish Government. Members also provide a great deal of their own personal equipment, including rucksacks, boots, GPS receivers and much more. Check out our sponsorship page to find out how much all of this equipment costs and how you might be able to help

Our Rescue Base

Our base is located in Newton Stewart, the ‘Gateway to the Galloway Hills.  Opened in 2012 and funded by the Order of St John Scotland, this is our first real home in 38 years.

Our Vehicles

We have a rescue fleet of three vehicles.  Our Land Rover 110 Defender ambulance and Vauxhall Movano Incident Control Vehicle are located at our base.
