Glentrool and its environs are described as “The Cradle of Scotland’s Independence” by Andrew McCormick in his authoritative book “Galloway: The spell of its Hills and Glens”. This walk starts and ends at Bruce’s Stone overlooking one of Scotland’s finest views, Loch Trool.

    Walk 1 - The Cradle of Scotland's Independence Cairnsmore of Fleet and the Knee of CairnsmoreWalk 2 - Cairnsmore of Fleet
    Cairnsmore of Fleet is the largest of the Solway Hills with superb views over Newton Stewart and the Machars. The route here is via the popular and well trodden path from Cairnsmore Farm. This walk should be suited to an averagely fit family and is well worth the effort.

    Walk 1 - The Cradle of Scotland's Independence The Merrick from Kirriereoch summitWalk 3 - The Mighty Merrick
    The Merrick dominates the hills around Loch Trool and this 'branched finger' is the highest of the 'Range of the Awful Hand'. At 843 metres, it is the highest summit in the Galloway Hills and the highest peak in South West Scotland. This route follows well trodden paths and is perhaps the most popular.

    Walk 1 - The Cradle of Scotland's Independence The view from the summit of Fell of EschoncanWalk 4 - The Bennan via the Fell of Eschoncan
    The Bennan via the Fell of Eschoncan is a fairly short route but it offers some fine views over Loch Trool and the surrounding hills. This route descends via the popular tourist route to the Merrick and the majority of the way is by clearly defined hill paths and tracks.
