The Team provides search and rescue assistance to the public in an area covering over 130 km (80 miles) from Stranraer in the west to Dumfries in the east, and 70 kms (40 miles) from the Solway Coast to the South Ayrshire Hills.

This area includes the Galloway Forest Park which attracts many visitors to its beautiful scenery and outdoor recreational amenities including hillwalking, mountain biking, fishing, game sports and orienteering.

Nearly 80 miles of the popular long distance footpath - The Southern Upland Way - from Cockburnspath on the east coast of Scotland to Portpatrick on the west, runs through the Galloway area. The Grey Man of the Merrick

The GMRT, which consists entirely of volunteers, is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies at the request of the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary.

We do not restrict ourselves to the remote hill regions but respond to incidents in low level, farming, coastal or urban areas - wherever the Team is needed.

The Team also supports emergencies in other areas including Lothian and Borders and has a close liaison with Moffat Mountain Rescue Team who cover the eastern area of Dumfries and Galloway Region.

The Team is celebrating 30 years of service to the walkers and visitors to Galloway. This site will provide an insight into what has happened allong the way.
