This was our September training
exercise. The team Ayrshire cadre started at
about 8 o'clock that morning to get things set
up. Eric (now our DTL) gave a briefing to a
good turn out of enthusiastic members before
training got underway.
We had a fixed rope coming
up through the wooded area and up over a small
crag so that the team could practice moving
with a prussik on the fixed rope. Above the
main terrace on Corwar crag we had a small abseil
set up; which Johnny C was looking after. On
the main terrace Davy R and Nina S had a large
abseil set up, with Kenny McK and Alan G doing
a lower which would probably be our preferred
method if doing it for real - so your hands
are free to deal with the casualty. Eric was
overseeing the whole operation.
The team moved round each station
seeing how it was set up then having a go at
being lowered or abseiling, all ropes were backed
up with prussiks and safety ropes. These exercises
took up most of the day. We then moved into
the woods to show the team how to do tree wraps
as an anchor using the friction of the trees
bark and not using knots thus retaining the
full strength of the rope.
The team practised this then
exercise then moved on to tying a stretcher
already prepared for lowering on steep ground.
Finally Eric gave a debrief
covering all aspects of the days activities
