 Security on Steep Ground

The Team prepare to rescue a crag fast climberTeam member security on high ground is of paramount importance at all times. The team members undertake training on high ground on a regular basis. Our technical rescue team are on hand to set up the various 'systems' required to deal with training scenarios. The scenarios are intended to represent the type of real life incidents the team may be called upon to deal with in the Galloway Hills.

The training featured here took place on Screel Hill between Auchencairn and Castle Douglas in 29th February 2004.

Scenario 1 - A climber is cragfast on a crag near the peak of Screel and the team have to prepare a system to abseil down to him and evacuate. The casualty recreates a variety of problems for the rescuers throughout the day.

A stretcher is lowered down a gullyScenario 2 - The team need to prepare and lower a stretcher down a very steep gully. This requires the preparation of a rope system and belay to ensure the safety of the casualty and the rescuers.

Scenario 3 - The team have no negotiate a difficult 'ramp' type rock with a laden stretcher. Again the safety of the rescuers and the casualty are of paramount importance here, but the ramp is negotiated without ropes.

The photographs here show the team in action. You will note that there is no casualty in the stretcher, however on at least one stretcher lower a team member volunteered to be the casualty.

The photographs here show the superb views which visitors to Screel can enjoy on a clear day. A number of walkers took the time to speak with the team and watch us in action.
