In
April 2003, the team participated in a days
training with Dogs and Handlers from SARDA (Southern
Scotland). The team are fortunate to have three
Search and Rescue Dogs Association Handlers
as members of our team. The dogs and their handlers
have a much wider remit, and may be called upon
to assist with searches anywhere in Scotland
and Northern England. In addition we value to
the regular support of handlers from nearby
teams.
The exercise, which centred around Craiglee
west of Loch Dee, right in the heart of the
Galloway Hills, allowed team personnel to work
closely with the dogs and their handlers. We
simulated a number of searches including line
searches, searches on steep ground and handler
navigational support.
All in all, this was a very successful day,
during which team personnel couldn't fail to
be impressed with the effectiveness of the dogs
and the skills of their handlers.
